Veterans Day Observance Moving Back to Nov. 11
Legislation to revert back to the traditional date for honoring war veterans was given final clearance in the House of Representatives in Austin, 124 to 1. The Senate had already approved the change and Gov. Dolph Briscoe had supported lining up Texas with 47 other states in wiping out the fourth Monday as the legal holiday for observing Veterans Day. It was assured that Texas Governor Briscoe would sign the bill into law.
The House of Representatives in Austin passed emergency legislation on Tuesday to clear the way for the Lower Colorado River Authority to proceed with construction of its coal-fired electric generating plant east of La Grange. The Senate breezed through the 15 amendments, dealing with language changes in a far-reaching rewrite of the LCRA Act before approving the bill in a 28-2 vote. If the House also approved the bill and sent it on for Gov. Dolph Briscoe’s approval, the $300 million ceiling put on LCRA in 1935 would be lifted. Gov. Briscoe had requested the emergency legislation.
Livestock mutilations had hit Fayette County. According to Sheriff T.J. (Jim) Flournoy, a Black Angus cow on a ranch near Muldoon was killed sometime Tuesday night, although it had not yet been determined how it had died.
Fayette County officials were meeting with state, federal and regional agencies to discuss sanitary landfills and waste management problems. According to the Capital Area Planning Council (CAPCO), Fayette County had a significant amount of land that showed good potential as being geologically suited to sanitary landfill operations.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Elise Berry, 92, of La Grange; Carl A. Schulze, 73, of La Grange; Miss Julia Jecmenek, 80, of Ellinger; Alvin Gerhard Behrens, 65, of La Grange; and Mrs. Henry Kana, 86, of Holman.
The La Grange Leopard Band was scheduled to perform Tuesday night at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at the Astrodome.
Paulett Tielsch received her bachelor of science degree in home economics with honors from the College of Home Economics at Texas Tech University. Her major was home and family life.
La Grange’s Leopards were in front by 61-59 with one minute left in the game when Gary Dippel sank a ball to stretch the margin to four against Van Vleck in the bi-district encounter. However, Van Vleck tied things up quickly, meshing a crucial free throw in the last five seconds to win, 64-63. Robert Poole was La Grange’s top scorer with 24 and leading rebounder. Tommy Taylor was next with 16, followed by Neal Miller with 15, Johnny Johnson with 6 and Ken Hatfield with 4. This was La Grange’s best cage year in more than three decades, winning 17 and losing five games.
La Grange City Council spent two hours discussing bids for furnishing a new garbage collection packing unit and a new truck chassis, but no decisions were made.
Three La Grange Leopards were picked for the all-District 25-AA Basketball Squad. Lep junior Johnny Johnson was the coaches’ unanimous choice for the second straight year. Other local picks were seniors Robert Poole and Tommy Taylor.
The La Grange low-rent housing program was still very much in the mill with contract signing expected to take place soon. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) had requested that the city foot the maintenance bill for the community center in the complex. However, the city turned this proposal down unless HUD’s decision became mandatory. La Grange Housing Authority Chair G.A. Koenig stated that HUD had reduced the number of units from 40 to 32 because of limited financing.

At Fort Worth, he would be competing with pullers from across the U.S. for over $18,000 in prize money. Franklin Brandt was representing La Grange at the event as a judge and track manager.
