Via Sound and Sight, Steinway Pianos to be Celebrated at Festival Hill

James Dick has been performing at Round Top Festival Institute for over 50 years on various Steinway pianos. Sometimes by the graciousness of patrons like Miss Ima Hogg and Faith Bybee. More recently on his favorite C&A 435. Join him for his annual recital on Saturday, March 8, in the Festival Hill Concert Hall and celebrate the Steinway piano. In conjunction with the annual James Dick piano recital the “Making Steinway” exhibition will be presented on stage. Mr. Dick will be performing works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert.
During World War II, Steinway & Sons produced specially-built pianos for the American troops sometimes airdropped onto battlefields to provide a bit of relaxation. Called the Victory Vertical or G.I. Steinways, the first “Victory Vertical” was dropped in 1942 by parachute, complete with tuning equipment and instructions. The piano on view at Festival Hill is a New York Upright Model 40”, Victory Olive Drab, completed on December 9, 1948.

The Fayette County Beekeepers Association (FaycoBeeks) will hold its next meeting on Saturday, March 1 at the Fayette County Agriculture Building in La Grange (255 Svoboda Ln). A free Smoker Lighting Workshop will begin at 4 p.m. followed by a Beekeeping 101 presentation from 4:30-5:30 p.m. A perfect introduction for those new to beekeeping. A potluck dinner will follow, so bring your favorite entrée, side, or dessert to share. After dinner, the business meeting will feature guest speaker Sheri Wilcox, Texas Master Naturalist, discussing pollinators. This is a great chance for beginners to connect with experienced beekeepers for mentorship and advice. Annual membership is $25 per individual or family, but membership is not required to attend. FaycoBeeks meets the first Saturday of every month, and more information can be found at faycobeeks.org. Everyone is welcome.

St. Rose Students Visit Main Street Theater

The St. Rose of Lima Catholic School sixth grade class visited Main Street Theater in Houston on Wednesday, Feb. 12 to see the onstage musical production of Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief. Based on Rick Riordan’s best selling children’s series, the musical was a great experience for the entire class. The singing, dancing, sound effects, and overall collaboration of the talented performers brought the novel to life. Students attending were (front, from left) Camila Saucedo, Annaston Kutac, Rylee Wright, Briley Hartensteiner, Kynslee Zapalac, (back) John Schmidt, Levi Johnson, Barett Redman, Luke Goedrich, Gage Smrkovsky, and Jacob Schramek. Business Recognized for Veteran Employment

Industry Bancshares Services, L.L.C., a subsidiary of First National Bank of Bellville and parent company Industry Bancshares, INC., along with VP of IT Infrastructure and Support Jeremy Pietsch, were recognized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, for contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America’s national guard and reserve force.

KJZT St. Anne’s Society No. 10 Meets

The meeting of the KJZT St. Anne’s Society No. 10 was called to order at 1 p.m. on Feb. 18 at St. John’s Hall. President Mary Jane Toddy opened the meeting with prayers for all living members and their families and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were eight members present.

Sheriff Warns of Scams

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek is reporting that the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is once again receiving several scam reports that someone is calling citizens of Fayette County and claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office and stating that the person has warrants for their arrest and they are collecting fees over the phone to get rid of the warrants.
