Just as the summer is starting to really heat up in Texas, it is time for children to go back to school. This year with COVID-19, going back to school will look a bit different. For those children who will be going back to in-person classes, it will be important to take precautions to make sure each trip is a safe one. Whether going to school as a pedestrian, bicyclist, bus rider, vehicle passenger or a new driver, follow safety guidelines to avoid injuries. Drivers also need to be vigilant because school children can be very unpredictable. They are easily distracted and can often run into traffic or out from behind parked cars. Looking out for children, rather than expecting them to look out for vehicles, is the best defense for drivers.

La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath reports on the following incidents his department responded to during the week of Aug. 2-9.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports activities of Fayette County Sheriff Deputies for the month of July 2020. Deputy Terry Guentert responded to a residence in the Cistern area for a reported burglary.

Julie Korenek, a 2020 graduate of Fayetteville ISD, received the Meadows Foundation Scholarship of $4,000 that was awarded by the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation. She was able to submit an application because she placed last year at state in UIL Ready Writing. She will be attending Texas A&M and majoring in poultry science. Julie is the daughter of Aimee and James Korenek.

La Grange ISD will follow the UIL Guidelines regarding spectator seating for extracurricular activities for the 2020-2021 school year. Occupancy of the football stadium and gym will be based on 50% capacity and social distancing guidelines. All ticket sales for sporting events will be done electronically through School Event Tickets website. A link will be posted on the La Grange ISD website when tickets are available for sale to the general public. Due to limited seating for events this school year, KTIM Radio will livestream games and KVLG/KBUK will be broadcasting live games.

La Grange Police recovered an estimated $18,000 in property that was stolen from Weeren Storage on State Highway 159 Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2. Police arrested two suspects in the case, 35-year-old Brittany Willett and 28-year-old Brandon Lee Allen, both of La Grange.

La Grange Police are looking for the person or group responsible for stealing political yard signs from private property in La Grange. Police Chief David Gilbreath reported that approximately 20 yard signs have been stolen so far this month, mostly on the north side of town.

In a story in Tuesday’s edition about increased traffic control on Highway 290, we said the speed limit is 70 miles per hour in Carmine. That is the speed limit approaching Carmine but through town it drops to 55 mph.

The La Grange Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is proud to announce that nine students from La Grange High School have received scholarships to support their pursuit of dual credit courses for the upcoming Fall semester at Blinn College. The scholarships are in the amount of $200 each and funded by the La Grange EDC. In working with Blinn College to develop strategies that will enhance youth workforce development discussions included ways to help eliminate financial barriers to pursuing educational opportunities within the community. “These scholarships will help support youth workforce development and level the playing field for the pursuit of higher education,” said Stacey Norris, director of community development for the City of La Grange.
