I started picking my second crop of cucumbers this week. I am so impressed with the variety I’m growing - “Sumter.” These are the same cucumbers I planted in the spring.

It’s been a tough time in our county. Many businesses have shutdown or cut back. Charities, too. Such as the Holy Smokers and their BBQ sales every second Saturday of the month at the St. James’ Church parking lot across from the HEB in La Grange.

Carlton Industries donated a standing sign to help direct traffic for the morning drop off at Sacred Heart Catholic School. This helps to remind everyone that during school hours enter by the church and exit by the gym to maintain one-way traffic for the safety of students and parents.

The Fayetteville Museum is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• The Bastrop Police Department is investigating a shooting that left a 19-year-old man injured. Police were called out to a report of shots fired along the 400 block of Magnolia Street just before 4 p.m. Sunday, the police department said in a statement. When police arrived, they found a 19-year-old with a gunshot wound. The man, who has not been publicly identified by police, was taken by helicopter to Dell Seton hospital for his injury and was being evaluated by medical staff as of Sunday evening, the department said. Police say the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. The shooting remains an active investigation.

Rheagan Karisch participated in the Fayette County Fair Commercial Heifer Show on Friday, Aug. 28. She showed her Beefmaster heifer, Little E, and placed fourth. She also exhibited a pen of one commercial heifer.

The Round Top-Carmine Booster Club is looking for new members for the 2020-2021 school year. The Booster Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. A membership form and additional information about the available levels is available on the school website under the High School’s page. ARTS, based in Fayetteville, continues to expand its programs. As the 2020-2021 school year opens, youth and adults in the South Central Texas region will have the opportunity to participate in the growing art programs. ARTS believes that its programs help people develop creative thinking, problem solving skills, develop leadership skills, aid in learning and school performance along with individuals with personal expression that transcends language.

Fayette County Commissioners signed a proclamation last Thursday, Aug. 27, designating September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Fayette County. They also granted permission to Presley’s Power to hang the ribbon. Presley’s Power was founded in 2013 in honor of Wessels’ granddaughter, Presley Belle, who died from childhood cancer at the age of 14 months. The non-profit works to bring joy and support to children and families battling childhood cancer.
