Blinn College’s longterm future in Schulenburg remains uncertain. At last week’s Blinn College Board of Trustees meeting, the college’s long term facilities masterplan was formally adopted, with no set direction for the Schulenburg and Sealy satellite campuses but rather retaining three options: • Stay the same • Evolve • Close “What role do Sealy and Schulenburg play in the long term for the district?” a representative from Gensler, a design and planning firm the college hired to create the masterplan, rhetorically asked the board during last Tuesday’s pre-board meeting budget workshop.

The American Legion Auxiliary members are a community of volunteers serving veterans, military and their families. In honoring our veterans, one of the core values is to demonstrate and pass on respect for our country and our nation’s flag. We promote patriotic youth programs, most notably the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, along with education programs and scholarships in local school systems. The H.J. Ehlers Unit 102, American Legion Auxiliary and Post held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 12 at the VFW Hall in La Grange. Prior to the business meeting, the Auxiliary members were honored to have several guests in attendance, Irene Szwarc of Hallettsville, the District 9 president, and the scholarship recipients and their families. The Shelby American Legion Post 602 awarded Madelyn Karstedt (above) with a $500 scholarship for her valedictorian academic achievement and community service and Bailee Justus (below) with a $500 scholarship for her salutatorian academic achievement and her community service. Both are 2021 graduates from the Fayetteville Independent School District. The scholarship was presented by Steve Pavlicek, finance officer.

La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath reports on the following incidents his department responded to during the week of May 9-16. Suspicious Person/Vehicle On May 10, Mohr received a call of a suspicious vehicle in the 2300 block of W.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and Fayette County Constables are charged with providing law enforcement services within the county and oftentimes can face the hazard of being isolated in remote environments. The Sheriff’s Office provides protection for two school districts, and is also a member of a multi-agency regional tactical team which responds to incidents which can range from an armed barricaded gunman and hostage situations to search and rescues.

In honor of all deceased veterans of Fayette County, Koenig- Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations will be giving away United States flags to family members for their loved one’s grave on Monday, May 31 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home located at 208 W. Pearl St. in La Grange. There will be a limited supply, first come-first serve.

A $19,512 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of Schulenburg will help the Boys & Girls Clubs of Champion Valley, Schulenburg unit renovate its restrooms to make them handicapped accessible and more energy efficient.

Since 1938 the American Legion has held an annual Oratory Contest for high school students under the age of 20. Competition begins at the post level and advances to a state competition, with one winner per state advancing to the national contest.
