Corina Blazek Named American Legion Quade-Werchan Essay Contest Winner

Since 1938 the American Legion has held an annual Oratory Contest for high school students under the age of 20. Competition begins at the post level and advances to a state competition, with one winner per state advancing to the national contest.

The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. The program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges of the American citizenship.

The 2021 Oratory Contest was not held in our school district, or at the national level, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, American Legion Quade-Werchan Post No. 338 was determined to not let this year pass without providing students at Round Top-Carmine High School the opportunity to participate in some form of competition and to obtain scholarship funds. The post, working with high school counselor Debra Foster, decided to hold a written essay contest using the same topics of the U.S. Constitution selected for the 2021 Oratory Contest.

After reviewing the submissions, the post is pleased to announce that Corina Blazek, daughter of Anthony and Graciela Blazek is the winner of the American Legion Quade-Werchan Post No. 338 2021 Essay Contest. Blazek was presented her certificate and a check for $500 from the post at the high school awards ceremony held on May 18.

The American Legion Quade-Werchan Post No. 338 and the Ladies Auxiliary meets the first Thursday of each month at their hall located at 1503 N. State Highway 237 in Round Top. The next meeting will be held on June 3 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
