Members of the American Legion Quade-Werchan Post No. 338 of Round Top presented funds to the Round Top-Carmine High School Library, through a gift to the Round Top-Carmine Education Foundation.

Fayette County beef cattle production continues to be a top performer in the state of Texas year in and year out. Annually, beef cattle producers face numerous challenges ranging from fluctuating cattle prices to environmental events like Hurricane Harvey and extreme drought. Therefore, the Fayette Beef Committee along with the Fayette County A&M AgriLife Extension Service work together and present timely and valuable best management practices to improve efficiency in beef cattle production.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports on the evening of May 24, at approximately 11 p.m. the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Weimar Police Department with a pursuit that entered into Fayette County traveling west along Interstate 10.

A local truck driver required rescue after floodwaters swept his semi rig into Cummins Creek near Ledbetter on Monday, May 26. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m.

During the month of May, some 15.69 inches of rain has fallen in La Grange (more in other parts of the county). That’s nearly a third of our average rainfall for a while year! 12.5 inches of that has fallen in just the last week and a half.

A packed house showed up to the La Grange City Council meeting Monday night, May 24. Many of those in attendance were there to speak and hear about drainage issues in town at a moment when floodwaters were threatening their homes for the second time in a week.

Jan Dockery took the oath of office as the new Mayor of La Grange on Monday night, May 24. Former Mayor Janet Moerbe, who did not seek re-election this year, administered the oath. Moerbe had been part of City government for 33 years, starting out on the Council and having served as mayor since 2001.

On Saturday, May 1, LHS freshman Landon von Minden and LHS junior Amanda Urban competed at the UIL State Current Issues and Events meet at Liberty Hill High School. This year, the State academic meet was held at various sub-hubs throughout Texas, and contest materials were sent to a central location for scoring. When results were finalized the following week, von Minden’s score had earned him the 3rd place medal in Class 4A. On Sunday, May 16, La Grange High School’s Lauren Faldyn’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Western Art piece was selected for the 2021 School Art Auction. Roughly 15,000 high school students in Texas make a piece for this competition every year. She placed 22nd overall in the competition and her work sold at auction for $22,000. “What an amazing accomplishment for this LHS student,” said La Grange art teacher Jack Vollbaum.

An $18,300 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative will help the newly incorporated City of Ellinger establish its first city hall. The Community Development Partnership grant, paired with matching funds of $4,575, will allow the Fayette County community of about 200 residents to purchase a portable building to house city records and act as a hub for city-related business.
