Another powerful storm rolled through Fayette County Saturday night, dumping another inch-and-a-half of rainfall (according to LCRA hydromet) on an already soaked La Grange. Several low-lying areas and roadways were again flooded.

Fayette County Chief of Emergency Management Craig Moreau gave an update on the state of the coronavirus in Fayette County last Friday. “Overall, we are in a highly improved position in comparison to where we were a few weeks ago and especially compared to where we were a few months ago,” Moreau said.

Juneteenth on the Square in La Grange will be Saturday, June 12 beginning at noon and continuing until 6 p.m. All churches are invited to participate.

The effort to restrict truck traffic on the Bluff hit a roadblock last week. Senate Bill 1053 filed by State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, who represents Fayette County, would have authorized Fayette County officials to restrict commercial truck traffic on major highways.

Not many people can say they’ve worked at the same place for 40 years, except for David Zapalac, CEO of Fayette Savings Bank (FSB). Zapalac, who grew up in the La Grange area, graduated from Texas A&M University in 1978 and went to work three years for Gulf Oil in Houston.

This year I’m growing Armenian cucumbers for the first time, and I’m so impressed with these plants. They are more closely related to melons than cucumbers, and they taste somewhat like a cross between a melon and cucumber.

At a special meeting Tuesday night, the La Grange ISD board of trustees approved several new hires as well as a number of resignations/retirements. Nathan Truex was hired as the new high school assistant principal.

Larry Schueckler will present his bronze sculptures and drawings in a beautiful exhibition to be hosted by Arts for Rural Texas in Fayetteville. This exhibit has been a year in the making. Scheduled for April of 2020, the show was rescheduled due to the pandemic. Now, the exquisite forms created by Schueckler will be offered to all.

Schulenburg-area veterans organizations held their annual Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 31. James Brossmann of the Schulenburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5623 served as the master of ceremonies. He is pictured below, left, saluting the memorial grave.
