Just when Texans started to think the Spanish Flu had finally run its course, on Feb. 4, 1920 the State Health Department reported 2,514 new cases in the past 24 hours.

“Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.” Children across our state recite this pledge at the start of every school day. Placing their right hands over their hearts, they take a moment to pause and appreciate the independent spirit of our beloved Lone Star State.

Voters who go to the polls for municipal and school board elections on May 7 will also be asked to decide on two proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution. Deputy Secretary of State Joe Esparza drew the ballot order last week for the two proposed amendments, both dealing with property taxes.

We’ve had quite a bit of coverage over the last few editions from the various candidate forums held for the upcoming county judge, county commissioners and justice of the peace races here in Fayette County. That election is March 1. A lot of us are wondering what exactly these roles entail anyway. Here’s the job descriptions of all three of those roles according to the Texas Association of Counties:

I’ve been thinking about walls, fences, enclosures, anything that keeps us separated and often isolated. And I wonder if we feel the need for protection or privacy? As a child I remember fences were rare unless someone was attempting to keep chickens in the backyard.
