No Easy Solutions

To The Editor:

I was truly saddened by the Mikus letter in the FCR last issue. It is absolutely sickening to me that people feel compelled to politicize horrific events. Why is it that buzz words like “AK-47” and “Right wing extremist” are the go-to tools of the uneducated citizenry?

No one can argue about epic loss, avoidable crime, and the sadness of it all, but why must so many proselytize on the back of tragedy?

My brother was at Edgar Allen Poe elementary in Houston, in 1959. He was in kindergarten there on the day that the mad bomber exploded his briefcase. My mother could not tell the story without bawling as she was in Washington D.C. helping her brother move, with my father.

She explained the poor communication of the day. No cell phones, no instant communication. She learned of the bombing by the front page of the DC paper. My grandparents were caring for my brother, and could not find him for 24 hours. My mother went 36 hours not knowing if her first born was alive or not.

Mental illness has and always will be with us. Humans will find a way to slaughter each other no matter the laws you pass. I just wonder what these people who offer up a two minute solution to these complicated problems have ever actually thought about all of this. There are so many facts to digest, among them the under 18 loss of life due to cellular distracted driving, and teen drug addiction, both of which take many more lives than any gun violence? If we magically passed 20 laws and took away all guns, who would make this happen and how could it be achieved? There are millions of guns out there already, and billions of rounds of ammo. What about the law breakers who decide not to turn in? What they propose is worthless “feel good” legislation that will accomplish nothing but political notoriety.

When I hear diatribes saying the founding fathers could never have imagined modern semiautomatic weapons, and that their only use is to kill a lot of people, quickly, I know that this source has no clue about the 2nd amendment.

I will educate them here. The Second Amendment is the guarantee that the citizens of the USA are armed to the teeth. The reason for this is to act as a deterrent to bad government. If the government turns bad, and violates the constitution, then it is the right and duty to rise up and overthrow that government.

Please join me in prayer for thoughtfulness, cooperation, wisdom, and virtue, for all politicians who carry the burden of addressing our current mass shooting problems.
