Leopards Bash Giddings

In one of the most historic football rivalries in Texas, La Grange downed Giddings Friday to put the Leps on the verge of a playoff berth. The Leps bashed the Buffaloes 38-14 in a continuation of a rivalry that has been going on almost every season for over a century. This one was over early as La Grange jumped out to a 24-0 lead and never looked back.

The JV purple beat the Giddings Buffaloes 45-0 to make their record 5-3 and improve their district record to 3-0. It was another great team effort starting with the offensive line helping pave the way for five rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown. Elijah Haardt had two rushing touchdowns, Tye Johnson, Julian Sherman and Gabriel Sifuentes all had one rushing touchdown. For the lone passing touchdown of the night Gabriel Sifuentes connected with Julian Sherman. The JV purple completed four 2pt conversions, two runs by Ethan Tarnowski, one run by Lakeith Williams, and a pass from Holdyn Cooper to Cordale Knapik while Edwin Luna was 1-2 on PATs. Defensively the Leps came up big pitching a shutout and forcing a fumble and two interceptions one by Collin Landis and Julian Sherman. Weimar Edges Winless Schulenburg 12-7

In a battle to stay out of the District 13-2A cellar, Weimar beat Schulenburg 12-7 in the annual battle of Interstate 10 rivals. This was the first district win of the season for the Wildcats who improve to 1-4 in district play and 3-6 overall. Meanwhile, Schulenburg stays winless at 0-8, though this was their closest brush with victory this season. The Shorthorns led in this one after a John Davis 10 yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Weimar pulled to within 7-6 after a Wyatt Lacina touchdown run later in that quarter but the Wildcats failed on a two-point conversion. So the Shorthorns held that 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter until Weimar’s Brady Henke scored a go-ahead touchdown with 11:41 left in the game.

A change in training is paying off for runner Brenna Iannelli. After suffering knee problems competing in track and field, the La Grange High School graduate opted for a more guarded approach to the Texas Lutheran University cross country season.

Salinas Leads RT-C to Big Upset on The Court Then Runs to District Title

Round Top-Carmine volleyball player and cross-country runner Maggie Salinas performs at such a level in both sports that has put her on top of the pack. In a recent win against number one ranked Fayetteville on the volleyball court, Salinas recorded a team-high 24 digs. The very next day, she placed first in the 1A district crosscountry meet to win individually and also propel her team to a gold medal. “Maggie is kind of our quarterback when it comes to defense,” said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Carney. “She’s a crucial part and it is absolutely her goal to make sure that a ball doesn’t hit the floor. As far as volleyball goes, she’s dynamic to our team and we’d be much different without her. As far as overall RTC athlete, she puts effort into everything she does and it’s with 100%. She’s gonna make a run in cross-country this year. Hopefully get her time down and go to state, then we’ll see what volleyball season does.”

We Have a Jackpot Winner This Week

After four weeks with no winner, someone’s getting a lot of money. Three entries correctly predicted all 10 winners of last week’s football pick-it contest, and amazingly two of those entries were turned in Jennifer Zaruba. But Jason Vela turned in the other, and he wins the $500 jackpot based on his tiebreaker prediction in the La Grange/ Caldwell game. He predicted the Leps to win 36-8 (the actual score was 44-10), beating out both of Zaruba’s predictions of La Grange wins of 24-14 and 21-10. We will try to get a photo of Vela collecting his winnings for Friday’s edition of the newspaper. Our jackpot goes back to $100 this week. Games below. Good luck!
