I took off on a Quilt Shop Hop with sew sisters, Kim Bonewald and Trisha Griste for a couple days of fabric acquisition. I met up with them in Flatonia and headed to our first shop in Luling to pick up our “pass” and then on to one of our favorite shops in Mc-Queeney that was not on the hop. We then drove on into San Antonio to the Mesquite Bean Quilt Shop to get our passes stamped. On the way out to Bandera and the next shop we stopped to have lunch at a barbecue place along the way.

Fayetteville ISD kindergartner Riley Patterson and her calf, Sabrina, took Grand Champion at the Fayette County Fair Bucket Calf competition last Sunday with the help of her mentor, Rilan Karisch. Riley is the daughter of Cory and Karlie Patterson and granddaughter of Sue Patterson. Public Hearing

Holy Cross Annual Church Picnic will be held on Sunday, Sept. 6 at the picnic grounds. They will be selling BBQ brisket, pork, fryers and sauce beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Ladies will be taking preorders for sides of beans, potato salad, coleslaw and noodles for $4 a pint. There is a signup sheet in the church Narthex for sides. Any pre-orders for sides need to be picked up by noon. Sides are also available the day of the picnic.

The Stray Gathering Cowboy Church has big plans coming up. They have a Friday Team Roping coming up on Sept. 18 at the Fayette County Sheriff Posse Areana. There will be buckles for the first and second average winners. For more information, please contact Butch Murphy at (281) 380-7788.

A new local music group, “Strykly Country” will debut at Freyburg Hall Saturday, August 29 with music from 8 -11:30 p.m. Schulenburg’s longtime musicians, Bruce Lebeda, Dennis Stryk, and Mike “Bubba” Olle have been performing music for decades.

The other day at Dairy Queen, I ran into a couple of fellow gardeners who read this column. They both noticed that I haven’t written about gardening for a few weeks.
