Wayne and Cathleen Tutt, who reside in the Warda area, celebrated 50 years of marriage on Aug. 7 with a barbque dinner, drinks and dancing at Swiss Alp Hall. This joyous event was hosted by their children and attended by family and friends.

The Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek reports that officers responded to 131 calls for service during the week of Aug. 7-13.

Recent La Grange High School graduates Owen Sobel (left) and Trey Hall (right) completed basic training for the United States Marine Corps on Aug. 13 in San Diego as members of 3rd Battalion, Lima Company, Platoon 3255. They are both currently at Camp Pendleton School of Infantry for Marine Combat Training.

State Representative Ben Leman filed legislation during the 2nd Called Special Session of the 87th Legislature to address the increased illegal activity along our border on Aug. 11. Included in Governor Greg Abbott’s call to the legislature is to provide legislation enhancing criminal laws or providing funding from unappropriated available revenues to support law-enforcement agencies, counties, and other strategies as part of Texas’ comprehensive border security plan. House Bill 154 will enhance certain offenses to a felony if committed while intentionally avoiding a federal or state law enforcement checkpoint.

Doug Stone will replace Josh Ward as the opening act on Saturday night, Sept. 4, at the Fayette County Fair. Fair organizers scrambled this week to find a replacement for Ward after the country singer cancelled the date due to injuries suffered when he fell from a horse on August 8.

The La Grange ISD school board met Monday and talked raises and finalized a budget among other items. Here’s some highlights: Pay Raises The administration recommended salary adjustments for teachers, administrators/professional staff, paraprofessional/ clerical staff and auxiliary staff who were employed in the district for the 2020-21 school year.

Lighting struck a storage tank and caused an explosion at an oilfield saltwater disposal site west of La Grange Wednesday afternoon. The site is located on State Highway 71 across from McCourt and Sons Equipment. The explosion blew the tank apart and launched it hundreds of feet away (right). The fire engulfed equipment and other tanks used for separating crude oil from saltwater waste that comes from oil wells. The equipment was situated inside an earthen berm, and the berm appeared to have contained fluids that leaked from the tanks. La Grange and Muldoon Volunteer Fire Departments responded. The fire was still smouldering Thursday morning. There were no injuries reported. Photos by Andy Behlen

The Schulenburg City Council voted Monday night to propose a 4.14 percent property tax increase next year. The rate will go from $0.21 per $100 of property value to $0.2187, which is the highest the Council could have set it before triggering a voter approval tax election.
