Things Get Wild as Local Students Perform ‘The Jungle Book’

Fayette County Community Theatre performed “The Jungle Book” in front of three sold out crowds last Friday-Sunday at The Casino Hall in La Grange. Fifty-six kids from all across Fayette County participated in the production which was directed by Conner Underwood, who just graduated from La Grange High School this spring and is headed to Texas State University to study theater this fall.

Catherine Poppe to Retire from Fayette Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Catherine Poppe, Fayette Electric Cooperative’s well known and highly respected Director of Marketing and Communication, is retiring on August 31, 2021, with 25 years of service. “Catherine has faithfully represented FEC in the communities that we serve and has held leadership positions representing this cooperative in industry organizations at the state and national levels,” says FEC General Manager Gary Don Nietsche.

Overall Grand Champion in the Schulenburg Festival IBCA Barbecue Cookoff was Caleb Warden’s Kickin’ Cajun Smokehouse of Deer Park. He is pictured here with the Schulenburg Festival Pageant Court. Parks also won first place in ribs and first place in brisket.

ARTS’ Emerging Artists Awards Announced

Arts for Rural Texas in Fayetteville announced the winners of the annual Emerging Artists Competition that opened on Saturday, Aug. 7. The exhibition is open to youth in grades six through twelve and offers awards at each grade level. Youth are encouraged to enter original artwork in several media from painting and drawing to photography to three-dimensional creations. The Emerging Artists Competition is proudly underwritten by Arne and Mary Le Johnson.
Best of Show award was presented to Phoenix Kooper, who is in 7th grade, for his painting Olympia.

Sam Houston State University Summer Grads

The following area students received degrees during the 2021 summer semester at Sam Houston State University. Tyler Dockery of La Grange received his Master of Business Admin, Business Administration.

Despite much lower traffic levels around Texas schools due to the pandemic, there were still hundreds of crashes in school zones last year. So as millions of Texas students return to class, the Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to watch out for kids walking and biking to school to keep everyone safe.
