Rep. Leman Files Legislation To Improve Law Enforcement’s Ability To Secure Border

State Representative Ben Leman filed legislation during the 2nd Called Special Session of the 87th Legislature to address the increased illegal activity along our border on Aug. 11. Included in Governor Greg Abbott’s call to the legislature is to provide legislation enhancing criminal laws or providing funding from unappropriated available revenues to support law-enforcement agencies, counties, and other strategies as part of Texas’ comprehensive border security plan. House Bill 154 will enhance certain offenses to a felony if committed while intentionally avoiding a federal or state law enforcement checkpoint.

“This bill protects private property rights, decreases the flow of drugs and human trafficking, and reduces the number of illegal persons entering our state. Due to the failure of President Biden to secure and defend our border, Texas must step up to ensure the safety of our citizens. House Bill 154 does just that by giving law enforcement and prosecutors more tools to protect Texans from illegal activity stemming from the complete failure of our federal government to secure our border,” said State Representative Ben Leman.

Representative Ben Leman is the State Representative of House District 13 which includes Austin, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lavaca, and Washington counties. Representative Leman serves on the House Calendars Committee, Energy Resources Committee, and the Committee on Land and Resource Management, for which he is the Vice-Chair.
