Faith Lutheran High School will host the Texas Lutheran Writers Round Up on Friday, Feb. 25 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Featured authors in attendance will be Sarah Baughman, Christina Hergenrader, Susan Maluschka, Ruth Meyer, and Bryan Wolfmueller. Special guest vendor will be Jeremy Clifton. Activities include live broadcasts, author meet and greet time, author presentations including question and answer time and afternoon workshops with the authors. Museum Donations/Questions Our local museum is asking for new donations to add to the special collections. Priority is being placed on old school yearbooks.

The Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 2. They held election of officers and the previous officers were re-elected by acclamation. Officers for 2022 will be Dave Weishuhn-president; Brandon Karisch-vice president; Bruce Kubena-secretary; Ronald Polasek-treasurer; Larry Bartosh-chief; and Greg Hunger-assistant chief. The retired grass truck chassis was sold for $9000, and the equipment from that unit was installed on the new grass truck. Additionally a First Responder Course was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 7 at the Ellinger Fire Station.

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Sunday, Feb. 6, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Toyota Tacoma on I-10 at the 671 mile-marker at approximately 4:51 p.m. for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver Thumann became suspicious that the vehicle was involved in smuggling illegal narcotics. Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle. Thumann deployed his canine Kolt to conduct an exterior sweep of the vehicle. Thumann observed Kolt alert to the bed of the truck for the odor of illegal narcotics. Kolt indicated to two large PVC pipes that were capped on each end. Thumann cut the pipes open and located approximately 15 pounds of meth with an estimated street value of $400,000. The driver, Eric Olachea, 39, from Spring Valley, Calif. was arrested for Felony Drug Possession and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.
