Municipal, school board and constitutional amendment elections took place Saturday, May 7. Fayette County voters overwhelmingly approved the two constitutional amendment propositions that were on the ballot. Both passed statewide with more than 80 percent of the vote. Proposition 1 extends statewide property tax relief passed in 2019 to elderly and disabled property owners whose taxes were frozen. Fayette Coun-ty voters approved it by a vote of 2,059-274. Proposition 2 raised the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $40,000. It passed in Fayette County by a vote of 2,063-310.

The Fayette County Auditor’s Office began moving furniture to their new home inside the old Pioneer Bank Building. The building will now be known as the Fayette County Main Street Annex.

Fayette, Bastrop, Caldwell and Lee counties are expected to receive more than $52 million in hazard mitigation grant funds related to Hurricane Harvey. Of those four counties, Fayette was the most impacted by the 2017 storm and could get the bulk of those funds.

The sewer plant on Babylon Lane in Schulenburg overflowed last month. Schulenburg officials told the Record that the incident happened on April 11 after one of the City’s industrial customers accidentally left a valve open.
