Nov. 10-14, 1972 With 3,383 votes cast, local voters agreed with the nation’s decision to reelect Richard Milhouse Nixon and Spiro T. Agnew as president and vice president, respectively, in Tuesday’s general election. Senator George McGovern and R. Sargent Shriver, the Democratic standard-bearers, received 1,400 votes in Fayette County, while Linda Jenness and Andre Pulley, the Socialist Party duo, polled six. Senator John G. Tower outdid his Democratic challenger, Barefoot Sanders, 3,104 votes to 2,121. Social Worker Party’s Tom Leonard received 2 votes and Flores Amaya of the Raza Unida Party got 10. Texas Governor Democratic nominee Dolph Briscoe won the state by a small margin. In Fayette County, he polled 3,099 votes over GOP hopeful Henry G. (Hank) Grover’s 2,136. Of the 8,346 registered voters in Fayette County, only 5,421 took time to cast their ballots.

It’s been awhile since James McMurtry has appeared in Fayette County, but all are excited in welcoming James back, along with Curtis McMurtry. James will of course, present songs from his new album, The Horses and the Hounds.

Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home and Cremations opened a new funeral home and crematorium in Ellinger last week. The Ellinger Chamber of Commerce hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting at the business on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Fayette County Commissioners lifted the burn ban at their meeting last Thursday, Nov. 10.

Those perfect “movie moments” are happening all the time in Flatonia. As I was at the Flatonia Lyric Theater interviewing owner Terry Ehler recently, a birthday boy who was celebrating with a party at the theater stepped out of his car with so much childlike excitement it made me see why Ehler loves what she has created.

Two La Grange High School seniors worked as election clerks at City Hall on Election Day last Tuesday, Nov. 8.

La Grange Knights of Columbus Council No. 2574 will be taking pre-orders for barbecue turkeys for Thanksgiving. The turkeys are 16-20 lbs. and cost $60. It’s been a tough year for the County budget. Skyrocketing costs for fuel and road building materials pinched the pursestrings this year, and it’s going to get even worse next year.
