Cow-Calf Clinic In Brenham

On behalf of the Extension Beef and Forage Committees and host agents from Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lee, Waller, and Washington counties would like to invite you to join us for the 51st Annual South Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic on Friday, Oct. 28, at the Washington County Expo in Brenham. The Committee has worked diligently to put together an excellent program, great tradeshow, and live cattle demonstration for the event this year. The day will be jam packed with presentations and demonstrations from industry leading experts. We would like to share a small token of our appreciation for your support of agriculture and the Extension Service in the nine-county area by inviting you to join us. If you can join for the day or even just for lunch, please feel free to stop by. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts sponsored by Texas Farm Credit. The morning sessions will include presentations focused on sustainability of the cow herd and will conclude with a bar-b-que brisket and sausage lunch at 12 p.m. at the Washington County Expo Food Court sponsored in part by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative.

La Grange’s Faison Home is Fighting for Its Life

Without community intervention, the Faison House will disappear as have many other Texas house museums, including Victoria’s McNamara House. “It’s a simple matter of money and volunteers,” Arnold Romberg, President of the Faison Preservation Society (FPS), explained. Unfortunately, according to the University of Maryland, American life in the twenty-first century is changing in ways that often leave individuals less likely to give or volunteer. When the La Grange Garden Club women saved the house in the 1960s, only 32% of women were in the workforce versus 57% today. Without their devotion and energy, the house would have vanished. Historic preservation funding in Texas is a tough business. Grants are becoming increasingly complex; grant writing courses abound. Numerous grants require nonprofits to match monies and pay for the entire project up front before reimbursement. In other words, you must have money to get money. Unfortunately, grants for mowing the lawn, paying utilities, or purchasing insurance are nonexistent.

Church Picnic Proceeds Benefit Holy Rosary

A portion of recent picnic proceeds from St. John’s Catholic Church in Fayetteville and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellinger have been donated to the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn rebuilding fund account at Fayette Savings Bank. The top picture shows a $10,000 donation from St. John’s and the bottom picture shows a $8,000 donation from St. Mary’s. This $18,000.00 donation has pushed the “matching side” of the campaign up to $87,000.
