Ya’ Messed with the Wrong Fella’, Part III

Tragedy at the Plum Depot, 1903: This installment in the Footprints of Fayette is the third in a series dealing with criminal activity in Fayette County. As in all the cases that were previously mentioned, the actions of a few can oftentimes lead to some tragic dilemma for others. In this story, which seems to come right out of some Hollywood western movie, love, jealousy, liquor, and a hot temper all mix together for a sad ending. The main character in this episode is a man named Frank Lowd, who resided in the Plum community. Born about 1864, the son of James and Molly Lowd, the family would be listed as farmers in the 1870 U.S. Census. His father died in 1881, and his mother’s death followed in 1895. Just how much these events had an effect on young Frank is not to be known. However, his life would start to change soon after. Articles in the La Grange Journal give the reader some pertinent information on his character: he became a member of the Plum Baseball Club, was involved in selling real estate, and was active in the Plum community. A dark spot occurred in March 1899 when Frank shot and wounded a man at Plum. He used the reasoning of “self-defense” during his court hearing, but this was just the start of his troubles.

Revisiting Roselles in My Garden

Iplanted some roselle seed the other day. I grew this plant in 2023 for the first time and saved some seeds. I was worried they would be slow to germinate with the cool weather recently, and the fact that these seeds are a few years old. But to my surprise, they sprouted in just a couple of days.
I took this photo of my roselle harvest in October of 2023. I’m growing this plant for the second time this year.

Community Theatre Presents ‘The Curious Savage’

The Fayette County Community Theatre (FCCT) presents The Curious Savage by John Patrick Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. with a matinee performance on Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m.. The Curious Savage is the story of an elderly widow named Mrs. Ethel P. Savage and the $10 million inheritance left to her by her late husband. With the money, she decides to help people pursue what her three stepchildren call “foolish dreams.” To prevent their stepmother, they have her committed to a sanatorium called The Cloisters. While there Mrs. Savage meets the gentle residents and finds them to be her true family. The Curious Savage is a warm comedy that compares the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the greed and hostility of so-called “normal people.” Ashley Gaas and Garrett Reavis co-direct this show performed by eleven area actors. “Directing this crew has been an absolute joy,” declares Reavis. “It’s been so incredible to see my vision come together and Ashley and I are so excited to share this show with the public.”
