Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that several deputies and local police department Officers were able to attend the Texas CIT Association conference this past week. The conference focuses on the intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system and brings together Peace Officers and Mental Health Professionals from across the state to network, share knowledge and ideas, and receive advanced training on mental health and crisis intervention.

The Fayette County Fair Association along with the City of La Grange has decided to postpone the construction of the new food court until after the 2024 fair. “We have experienced some unexpected hurdles that delayed the start of the project.

It’s was a bee-utiful week last week at Senior Connections in Schulenburg. Lunch and Learn speaker Bob Smothers kept members all laughing with his humor with his presentation about beekeeping. Bob brought his beekeeping equipment for members see, and he shared information about requirements for getting agriculture exempt status by raising them on your property. Five to 20 acres is required. The hand outs for those wanting more information and contacts of other bee enthusiasts in the area were very helpful.

St. Rose of Lima Science Fair was held on Tuesday, April 16 at the KC Hall in Schulenburg.

National Independent Bookstore Day celebration will be at The Story Peddler bookstore in Bellville. It will be held on Saturday, April 27. The celebration begins at 11 a.m. with Children’s Story Time, face painting, and an appearance by our Book Dragon mascot. At 1 p.m., local poets will be reading from various selections of their poetry. Live music will begin at 2 p.m.

The La Grange City Council approved new bylaws and operating procedures for the Fayette Public Library at their meeting on Monday, April 22. Those documents included a few major changes.

At the recent District 11 Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) Spring Conference held in Aransas Pass, a member of the Fayette County Walhalla EEA Club was honored. Marilyn Petrich, a 73-yearmember, was honored with the 2024 District 11 Texas Treasure Award. Through the years Marilyn has served in many officer positions. Her daughters, Donna Burton and Jesse Kokemor, as young children attended many Club events and as babies played in a laundry basket while their mom served food during the Fayette County Fair. Later they also joined the Walhalla Club as Active Members. At the age of 96 Marilyn is still an Active Member and still serves on the County EEA Scholarship Committee. Also attending the Spring Conference were Janice Alexander, Fayette County EEA Council Treasurer and Sally Garrett, County Extension Agent-Family & Community Health.
