Seniors Learn About Bee Keeping
It’s was a bee-utiful week last week at Senior Connections in Schulenburg. Lunch and Learn speaker Bob Smothers kept members all laughing with his humor with his presentation about beekeeping. Bob brought his beekeeping equipment for members see, and he shared information about requirements for getting agriculture exempt status by raising them on your property. Five to 20 acres is required. The hand outs for those wanting more information and contacts of other bee enthusiasts in the area were very helpful.
Senior Connections has resumed the painting of garden poles on Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m. These poles are available to purchase as a nice donation to the center. You’re welcome to view them at Senior Connections, or look for pictures of them on Facebook as we post them.
We all feel the need to be needed, to feel useful, and productive, and to have the opportunity to help others, no matter our age. So on Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m. at the center and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Arts For Rural Texas, members create art and craft items as part of the “Art With Purpose” project. Members will be creating gifts and cards for nursing homes, and some to sell for fundraiser for our Senior Connections programs. Starting with Paradigm at The Oaks in Schulenburg will be the first recipient. The new director Pam Noell will be coming next month for Lunch and Learn to talk about hydrotherapy they offer their residents and other changes made under the new ownership. They have needs for their people, and so we will be collecting these items at the center the first two weeks of May. They are needing board games, craft supplies, men’s and women’s clothing and shoes, and cards for all occasions.
There are color pages for you to take home or work on while at Senior Connections that will become sun catchers to give them. Take one home and let your inner child come out as you color. If you have any wide mouth jar rims gathering dust, Senior Connections could use them too.
Celebrating birthdays for the month of April and enjoyed fabulous deserts brought by Cynthia Trojacek and Cynthia Villarreal were Annie Mae Ripper, Amparo Salina’s, Marta Beckmann, Helen Janda, Dianna Wick, Janice Jared and Ira Blahuta.
Brandy with Crown Hospice in Victoria returned to call bingo after a six month maternity leave. She had a baby boy. Barbara Nugent and Peggy Hyatt tied for the blackout prizes.
Looking ahead, the next monthly excursion will take members to Magnolia Days Festival in Columbus on May 18. There will be something for everyone including a cruise-in car show, Magnolia Belles contest, live music, art show, lunch at Hound Song Brewery, and great people watching. Stay tuned for more information and a signup sheet for Schuber transport.
As always, there are great ways to connect to other seniors and the community at Senior Connections.
