The History of Camp Street in La Grange: Part II

In August 1860, Governor Sam Houston commissioned William G. Webb, veteran of the Mexican War, legislator, and an attorney in La Grange, as a Brigadier General with orders to organize the 22nd Brigade of the Militia of the State of Texas, comprising the counties of Fayette, Colorado, Wharton and Matagorda.

Oh Deer, That’s Illegal

Game Warden Shaun Bayless got an unusual call Tuesday afternoon about a man walking a whitetailed fawn on a leash in front of the Courthouse. The man, who asked not to be identified, said he found the fawn a few weeks ago in the West Point area.
A man in West Point found this abandoned fawn a few weeks ago and took him in. He was walking the fawn on a leash around the courthouse square in La Grange on Tuesday when Game Warden Shaun Bayless encountered him. Bayless informed the man it was illegal to possess a whitetailed deer without a permit and instructed him to take it to a wildlife rehabilitation center in Elgin. Photo by Andy Behlen

LGPD’s Maxwell Wins Officer of the Year Award in Houston

The 100 Club of Houston presented La Grange Police Officer Mitchell Maxwell with an Officer of the Year Award at their annual banquet on May 22. Maxwell saved the life of his fellow officer, Kevin Currington, on May 9, 2024, after Currington’s service pistol inexplicably discharged inside of the holster.
