Splashing Into Summer

The La Grange city pool had a successful opening day on Friday, June 2. Families and friends came to beat the heat and celebrate the start of summer. Above, children jump into the pool together hand in hand. Left: A teen throws a ball up to hit to his friend at the pool. Kids and senior admission is $1. Adults are $2. The pool is open 1-5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. The pool is located at Kruschel Park – 480 W. Colorado St.

Highway 77 Widening Project South of LG Begins

Construction to widen US 77 south of La Grange began last week. Lucea’n Kuykendall, spokesperson for Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), reported that the project involves a roughly 1.5 mile stretch of US 77 south of FM 155. Crews will widen the shoulders of the highway from six feet to ten feet along that stretch of roadway.

Juneteenth Events Will Span Two Weekends Here

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining “June” and “nineteenth,” it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved Africans Americans in Texas (a picture of the Galveston Newspaper article about the order is pictured below).

Shop Burns Down

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department fought a shop fire on Bryant Rd. just north of Interstate 10 Saturday afternoon, June 3.

Record Places in Five State Categories

At the Texas Press Association’s annual convention in Round Rock last week, The Fayette County Record won five awards in the Better Newspaper Contest. Judging was done by members of the Oregon Press Association and was for work done during the 2022 calender year. The Record won: First Place in Public Notice reporting, for work by Regina Keilers, Andy Behlen and Jeff Wick chronicling the public response to a proposed hydrogen plant in La Grange.

Hurricane Season Is Here, Be Prepared

Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Angela Hahn reminds the public that hurricane season is here, and while Fayette County generally isn’t in the bullseye, it’s always good to have a plan in place for disasters.

AMEN Sees Increase In Families Served During May

The AMEN Food Pantry continued to be busy in the month of May. A total of 328 families were served for the month for a total of 957 individuals. In the previous year during the month of May, 256 families were served, which represents a 22 percent increase of families served in May.
