It’s festival time in Burton. The 31st annual Burton Cotton Gin Festival will be held on Saturday, June 13, on the grounds of the Texas Cotton Gin Museum. Watch Texas history come alive in celebration of the 1914 Burton Farmers Gin, the oldest operating cotton gin in America, with a day of family fun from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. ... and it’s free.

Hogs have been moving in the area with a number of them getting hit on the roads. Local hunter, Chris Joplin, has taken on helping control the population and has caught and killed over 60 head so far. This is only making a small dent in the hog density, but any and all elimination of this nuisance is needed to help control the damage to the land.

With the arrival of the month of June, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church has determined that they will be able to once again offer the regular Adult Bible Study opportunities and Children’s Sunday School, but will continue with the drive-in format for Sunday Worship Service.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Wednesday, June 3, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Kolt, stopped a Lincoln SUV on Interstate 10 at the 660 milemarker at approximately 1:29 p.m. for a traffic violation. After speaking to the driver Sgt. Thumann observed several indicators of drug smuggling. After further investigation Sgt. Thumann located approximately 3.5 kilos of cocaine and U.S currency from drug proceeds. The cocaine has a street value of approximately $350,000. Gabriela Angelica Machado (24) of Laredo was arrested for felony cocaine possession and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

The Swiss Alp Farm Bureau’s 2020 Scholarship has been awarded to Kelli A. Zapalac, graduate of Schulenburg High School. Kelli is the daughter of Patrick and Calleen Zapalac. She plans to attend West Texas A&M. Her proposed college major is theater education. The Swiss Alp Farm Bureau awarded two scholarships to students whose parents or grandparents are members of the Swiss Alp Farm Bureau.

The Swiss Alp Farm Bureau’s 2020 Scholarship in the amount of $500 has been awarded to Becca Heinrich, graduate of La Grange High School. Becca is the daughter of Bruce and Michelle Heinrich and granddaughter of C.M. and Mary Muras. She plans to attend Midland Junior College. Her proposed college major is business. The Swiss Alp Farm Bureau awarded two scholarships to students whose parents or grandparents are members of the Swiss Alp Farm Bureau.

Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) is planning ahead and implementing best practices for safety during its June reopening. When you enter the facility, your temperature will be read with a temporal scanner. Right now, masks are still recommended, so visitors are asked you to wear a mask. If you don’t have one, a mask will be provided to you. A handwashing station will be available where visitors will be asked to wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer will also be available.
