City of Smithville Police Chief Mike Maugere Resigns

Smithville Police Chief Mike Maugere resigned effective May 22 to enter the private sector. The City promoted assistant chief David Repka to take his place. Maugere served five years as police chief. He started out as a patrol officer for Smithville back in 1993. Five years later he joined the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked until he went back to Smithville PD in 2006. In 2013 he was promoted to captain and took over as chief the following year.

Maugere has accepted a position with a private security firm in Austin, the Times reported.

An autopsy has been ordered for 20-year-old Kendree Dashawn Citizen of Sealy who died in an apparent drowning on the night of May 23 at Lake Somerville. Burleson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Pollock said Citizen and at least two other friends had been joyriding and hanging out. They were riding back to Welch Park on the boat and they were 50 yards from the shore and Citizen and several others decided they were going to jump off and swim to shore. Once at shore they saw Citizen go down and they went to try to find him but couldn’t. A Texas Parks and Wildlife boat eventually recovered his body about 10:30 p.m.

The local district attorney says a former Brenham High School assistant volleyball coach was indicted on serious felony charges involving indecency with a child. On May 12, the 21st Grand Jury indicted 29-year-old Ian Calandra. Calandra currently lives in Jourdanton and was arrested there on May 20. Calandra served as an assistant volleyball coach for the BHS varsity volleyball team for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. Calandra resigned in May 2019 and results of the school’s internal investigation were turned over to local authorities.

Caitlyn Harman, a 17-yearold senior volleyball player from Bastrop High School, died on May 30, according to her family. Harman ranked No. 7 in her graduating class of 291 and was planning to attend Texas A&M this fall. She would have been 18 on June 6.
