James Dick will perform on the Layton House porch on Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. The hour-long solo piano program will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, as well as several others. All tickets must be purchased in advance online. Attendees are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing. Retta Chandler, president of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, shows off a new exhibit at the Center’s museum, which features artifacts from the Catholic Czech Club of Dallas. The collection includes photographs of a great many polka bands that were active during the Club’s heyday in the 1960s and 70s. The photo on the display pictured above is of Snapka’s Polka Band. Chandler is holding a cookbook that the Club published, which includes not only authentic Czech recipes, but also a wealth of folklore and history about Czech immigration to Texas. The City of La Grange, the La Grange Police Department and the La Grange Citizens Police Academy are pleased to announce that, in conjunction with the Fall Clean Up, the City will host a “Secure Document Shred Day” on Saturday, October 24.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, except in La Grange this Tuesday, Oct. 6. Chick-fil-A of Bastrop served free chicken sandwiches from a pop-up at the Main Street Eats food court next to the former Prause’s Meat Market on the courthouse square. Fans of the popular fast food chicken joint lined up around the block for the promotion. If you mention the “Warda Witch” to anyone that grew up in the area or has lived here a long time, you are most certain to get some raised eyebrows. Some people think the witch was the ghost of a young woman that was killed many years ago while she was checking her mail on Hwy.

Concerned residents of the Ellinger community turned out for a meeting about the proposed incorporation. Folks gathered in the dining hall at the Ellinger Community Center on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Monday, Oct. 5, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Interdiction Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K-9 partner Kolt, stopped a Dodge pickup on I-10 at the 658 mile-marker at approximately 10:29 a.m. for a traffic violation.

Parkinson’s Group Anyone struggling with the Parkinson’s movement disorder is invited to attend the reactivated support group in La Grange the third Thursday of every month. This support group is for patients and caregivers.

For the past few Saturdays, local supporters of President Donald Trump’s re-election have held a parade, dubbed the Fayette County Trump Train, through La Grange and surrounding areas. This past Saturday afternoon, a disturbance arose as the parade traveled through the Northpointe neighborhood in La Grange, with both sides accusing the other of uncivil behavior.
