La Grange Mayor Janet Moerbe will retire this year after 33 years in office. In 1988, while working as a teacher at La Grange ISD, she won her first election to the City Council. In 2000 she became mayor.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek remained hospitalized as of last Friday. Korenek was injured in an automobile crash near Fayetteville early Sunday morning, Jan.

Fayette County Judge Joe Weber announced last Friday that the County obtained 100 coronavirus vaccine doses that will be dedicated to certain atrisk teachers in the County. Weber said the doses will go to teachers with pre-existing medical conditions that make them more at-risk to the coronavirus.

Mushroom hunter Randal Banik of Round Top has made an amazing local natural discovery. While exploring last month on property that been in his family for generations in northern Fayette County he came across one of the rarest mushrooms in the world – and one he said “probably less than 100 people in the world have seen.” It’s called the “Texas Star Mushroom” or the “Devil’s Cigar.” The mushroom gets its names because it resembles a black cigar before it splits open into a starlike arrangement, the color of tan leather.

If you like eating asparagus, you should plant an asparagus patch, but it takes a little patience. You can plant asparagus from seed, but it will take several years to produce a good crop of asparagus spears.

The Fayette Public Library has purchased mobile hotspots to lend to card holders across the community who need internet access. Hotspot internet service is provided by Mobile Beacon and the Sprint network with unlimited data at 4 GE LTE speeds. Up to 15 devices may be connected to the hotspot at once. Hotspots will be available for patrons to take home and access the internet on their computer, phone, tablet, or other device.
