Sheriff on the Mend

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek remained hospitalized as of last Friday. Korenek was injured in an automobile crash near Fayetteville early Sunday morning, Jan. 31.

Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff’s Office told the Record last Friday that Korenek could be released from the hospital over the weekend. The Record asked for a statement from Korenek about the crash, but he had not yet contacted the newspaper.

“He’s not in any serious danger,” Beyer said. “He’s recovering. Knowing the Sheriff, as soon as he gets out of the hospital he’ll be back in the office.”

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated the crash. The agency said the crash report was not complete as of Friday, Feb. 5. DPS Sgt. Deon Cockrell was able to release a few details.

Cockrell said the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 31. at the intersection of West Main and Rusk Street. Cockrell said Korenek was a passenger in the vehicle.
