The La Grange ISD School Board met Monday with a full agenda of items to discuss. Here’s some highlights: Administrative Reports Superintendent Bill Wagner reminded the board of the upcoming academic banquet to be held on Monday, April 26 at the pavilion at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn.

Thirty-two students represented La Grange High School at the UIL Regional Academic Meet at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on Saturday, April 17. Eight students earned medals and two of those students will advance to the State meet. Fayette County Judge Joe Weber testified before the Texas Senate Transportation Committee Wednesday morning in favor of a bill filed by Sen. Lois Kolkhorst that could limit truck traffic on the Bluff south of La Grange and in Fayetteville. Kolkhorst’s bill, Senate Bill 1053, would establish a process by which the Fayette County Commissioners Court could petition the Texas Transportation Commission to reroute commercial traffic around certain areas in the County. During a hearing before the Senate Transportation Committee Wednesday morning, Weber spoke about the numerous accidents involving 18-wheelers on the Bluff. He also told senators about the dangerous situation in Fayetteville involving 18-wheelers turning at the tight corner of FM 955 and SH 159.

On March 22, NVCC had a visit from David Carpenter and Elroy Dieringer, board members at the Schulenburg Historical Museum, located in downtown Schulenburg. They told members about how the museum got started, the age and history of the building and they described growing into the new side of their building, and how they discovered the original joists held together with individually made square-headed nails.

Pitman Cemetery will be once again holding the annual Memorial Service on the first Sunday in May. Last year’s service was canceled due to the pandemic, so this will be a great step for getting back to a normal. Everyone who has loved ones laid to rest is welcome to come out and pay your respects to them. This is a chance to catch up with family and friends in an outdoor venue. The chapel will be open, but if you wish to sit outside, just bring your lawn chair and enjoy the wonderful weather. Hopefully the outside speaker will be working and everyone can hear the message.

With Winter Storm Uri long in the rear view mirror and with the cold and wet Easter weekend that passed, it brings up the question what we to expect in the coming years or was this winter just an anomaly?

The Historic Oak, the old tree located at the corner of Colorado and Washington Streets also known as the Muster Oak, has suffered some indignities through the years, including being scarred by lightning in the 1840s. Surrounding the tree with concrete sidewalks and paved streets helped speed its general decline. After noticing the lack of leaves on the oak, several measures were employed that began to restore the tree back to health and it is looking pretty good these days. However, things could have been very different after two other serious accidents that happened within just one week almost a century after Nicholas Dawson and his company organized under its canopy.

The Texas Senate has unanimously passed SB 598 by Senator Lois W. Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) to require a voterverifiable paper audit trail for all elections systems. The bill also prohibits any voting system from being connected to the internet and includes a risk limiting audit to ensure the accuracy of voting systems.

It is that time of year! Spring is in the air and baseball and softball fields are buzzing with activity. Baseball has been a part of Turtle Wing Foundation’s culture from its beginning.
