Monday, May 3, St. Rose eighth grade students received The Bishop’s Award from Bishop Brendon Cahill in a prayer service and ceremony along with other eighth graders from the diocese. To earn the award the students must acquire service hours and attain a required score on a theology test of church doctrine.

CDA Court Annunciation No. 1962 held their regular monthly meeting on April 26, at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, May 6, St. Rose of Lima Catholic School recognized and presented service awards to the following faculty and staff members: 15 years Rosanne Gallia and Virginia Olsovsky; 20 years Jeannie Mican and Matt Bonner; 35 years Donna Kunz. We thank all teachers and staff for their dedication of selfless service to the one resource essential for our future children. The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) hosted its 19th annual Slavnost “May Fest” at the Round Up Hall in La Grange on Sunday, May 16. The event included a fried chicken meal and music by Mark Halata and Texavia. The event was supposed to take place on the grounds of TCHCC’s Czech Village at the fairgrounds. Organizers moved the event inside the Round Up Hall due to a forecast of rain on Sunday, although not much fell. The Slavnost was well-attended despite the threat of bad weather. The day before he was set to move into the new house he and his wife have bought in La Grange, new St. Mark’s Medical Center CEO Mark Kimball had other responsibilities to attend to.

Numerous local businesses and volunteers worked together to hold several teacher appreciation events at La Grange ISD during Teacher Appreciation Week earlier this month. Teachers were treated to special meals during the week, and also given special gifts from local businesses.

Fayette County Commissioners renegotiated the County’s banking services agreement with Fayette Savings Bank (FSB) at a meeting last Thursday, May 13. The County went out for bids for banking services two years ago and awarded the bid to FSB.

May 18-21, 1971 John L. Giese, the manager of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce, received an invitation from Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes to join a delegation of 1,000 Texans who were flying to Paris, Stockholm and Moscow on a seven-day mission beginning August 1 in an effort to secure release of American military prisoners being held by North Vietnam.

Fayette County Judge Joe Weber asked other county leaders to begin documenting the cost associated with illegal immigration in the County. At the Commissioners Court meeting last Thursday, Weber said he recently received a letter from Governor Greg Abbott asking for those numbers.

Saturday was a party 200 years in the making as folks celebrated what would have been the 200th birthday of Heinrich Kreische, the German immigrant who constructed the Kreische Home and Brewery that are preserved at the state historic site above La Grange. The event was celebrated with music, kids games, birthday cake (above, right) lots of volunteers (right) and fittingly for a celebration of Kreische, beer.
