Benjamin Joseph Newton, of La Grange, was recently named to the University of Mississippi’s Spring 2021 Honor Roll. Newton was named to the Chancellor’s Honor Roll, which is reserved for students who earn a semester GPA of 3.75- 4.00.

Turtle Wing Foundation considers community education and advocacy a critical part of their programming. Encouraging youth to be supportive of their peers with learning differences, promoting fields of service that would encourage young adults to explore careers that would involve providing therapeutic or academic services to the children and families served by Turtle Wing, and attracting or encouraging additional service providers to the rural areas they serve are just a few items that fall under this program area.

Erin Treybig of Schulenburg was named to the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Spring 2021 Dean’s Honor Roll. Treybig is a sophomore majoring in psychology.

It is with great pleasure that Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) congratulates Amelia Slover and Gracie Davis both of La Grange on being named to the Winter 2021 President’s List. The winter term runs from January to May.

Statistics indicate that foodborne illness continues to be a health issue in the United States. Each year, 1 in 6 Americans will become sick, 128,000 will become hospitalized, and 3,000 will die due to a foodborne illness.

The Meyenberg surname is familiar to many of the older citizens of La Grange because of the Meyenberg Drug Store and the Robison-Meyenberg house that were once located on Main Street across from the courthouse. Julius Meyenberg, the proprietor of the Meyenberg Drug Store, was the youngest of eight children born to Julius and Rochine Kunigunde (Oske) Meyenberg, who lived on a farm in the Bluff Community until 1866 when they moved into La Grange and Julius Sr. established a drug store. Just a year later, three brothers, a sister, and their mother all died in the tragic yellow fever epidemic that decimated La Grange in 1867. This left only Helena, Edmund, Selma, and Julius Jr. living to adulthood. This story will focus on Edmund, who was born January 25, 1859 and was taken on as a young apprentice at the Zander Saddle Shop in La Grange. Having learned his trade, Edmund moved to Pecos, Texas where he established his own saddlery business about 1893.

The Schulenburg Knights of Columbus “Keep Christ in Christmas” Poster contest winner was announced. Grand Knight Paul Zapalac presented Phoenix Richter her second place award at the state level..

Max and Joyce Lidiak of Cypress and Rutersville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, May 8 with immediate family members present. Father Sean Horrigan of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church preformed a special anniversary blessing. Pictured are the Lidiaks, their daughter, Jamie, and grandson, Cade.

Ledbetter Homecoming is scheduled for Sunday, June 13 at Ledbetter Firemen’s Park. A drive-thru fried fish dinner will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tickets are pre-sale only and are available from Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department members, at Carmine State Bank, and at Round Top State Bank in both Round Top and Giddings. A bake sale will benefit the Ledbetter Homemakers’ Club.

The Fayette County Grand Jury handed down 18 felony indictments on May 13. An indictment is not a finding of guilt.
