Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) today announced a temporary increase in food benefits for families participating in the Texas Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) through September 2021. This temporary increase specifically covers the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

The AMEN Food Pantry continued to be busy in the month of April. 233 families were served for the month for a total of 653 individuals. A total of 142 volunteers for 322 hours served the pantry. A total of 3,372 pounds of food were donated.

The Fayette County Commissioners Court appointed 14-year-old William Travis Bernsen to the Fayette County Historical Commission. Historical Commission Chairwoman Bobbie Nash said Bernsen will assist the Commission with building a database of historical markers in Fayette County. She said the work involves documenting the GPS coordinates of each marker. Nash said that William Travis, a bright homeschooler and apprentice to his father, local land surveyor William Bernsen of Plum, is especially suited for the job. The Smith-McMillan Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented its Community Service Award to Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau at the Fayette County Commissioners Court meeting on May 27. The group recognized Moreau for his work coordinating the County’s response to emergencies and natural disasters along with his work dealing with the coronavirus pandemic for the County. In 1917, when the United States involvement in World War I was eminent and young African American men were required to register for the draft, they were expected to serve in segregated units led by white officers. At the time, those in command feared they would perform poorly in combat, while others feared that well-trained black soldiers would be a threat to society when they returned home. Of the 200,000 black troops who were sent overseas, most, like Bishop McVey of Flatonia, served in support roles. Bishop’s younger brother, Lawrence, had a very different experience.

Ledbetter Homecoming is Sunday, June 13 at Ledbetter Firemen’s Park. A drive-thru fried fish dinner will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tickets are pre-sale only and are available from Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department members, at Carmine State Bank, and at Round Top State Bank in both Round Top and Giddings. A bake sale will benefit the Ledbetter Homemakers’ Club.

Justin Shimek of Fayetteville graduated from Texas State University on May 13 with a degree in criminal justice. Attending the ceremony was his grandfather Larry Shimek, of Fayetteville. Justin plans to pursue a career in law enforcement.
