The deadline for accepting student transfers was June 15. At this time, the district has 71 student transfers that have been approved to attend classes in the La Grange ISD for the 2021-22 school year. There is a maximum of 75 transfer students allowed by the district. The breakdown by campuses is as follows: elementary – 39 students; middle school – 9 students; and high school – 23 students. These students are transfers from 11 different school districts. Approval of transfers is an administrative decision. If a student is denied transfer, there is an appeal process.

Despite rain delays, workers at the La Grange High School Stadium artificial turf project managed to complete demolision work and install two feet of compacted select fill foundation that will support the future artificial turf surface. It has been four months since Winter Storm Uri crippled Texas. Although my position with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension encourages families and businesses to prepare for disasters, the storm highlighted weaknesses in my own family’s preparedness plan. Since the passing of the storm, I have reflected on ways we could have been better prepared. The utmost need I identified was an improved tool to receive hazardous weather updates.

July 20 is the date for the next book club meeting. “The Guest List” by Lucy Foley will be discussed. There will be no meeting in August and the book selected for Sept. 21 meeting is “The Art of Hearing Heartbeats” by Jan-Philipp Sendker. Come join the group.

The 171st Round Top Fourth of July was celebrated despite weather conditions that were challenging. Despite a steady downpour, more than 100 parade entries traveled through Round Top to the delight of spectators under umbrellas and rain jackets.
