LGISD Accepts 71 Transfer Students for New School Year
The deadline for accepting student transfers was June 15. At this time, the district has 71 student transfers that have been approved to attend classes in the La Grange ISD for the 2021-22 school year. There is a maximum of 75 transfer students allowed by the district. The breakdown by campuses is as follows: elementary – 39 students; middle school – 9 students; and high school – 23 students. These students are transfers from 11 different school districts. Approval of transfers is an administrative decision. If a student is denied transfer, there is an appeal process.
Kinder Camp and Camp Summit
Tracy Head, the LGISD director of curriculum, was at the meeting to give a report on Kinder Camp and Camp Summit. Both of these summer school programs were designed to help the students in grades K-2 who were needing a little extra before moving on to the next grade. The 16 students who attended Kinder Camp received instruction in phonics and reading. Identifying letters and sounds was a key component of the camp. The 24 students who attended Camp Summit received instruction in reading in a camp-like atmosphere.
Gifted and Talented Program
Stephanie Kates, the gifted and talented coordinator for LGISD was at the board meeting to give an overview of the program and to provide the board members with training to ensure program accountability. There are 50 students at La Grange
Continued from front Elementary, 28 students in the Middle School, and 66 students in the High School. Some of the activities that the students at La Grange Elementary participated in this year were: building bridges, writing and producing a play, building a business, and designing a building.
HVAC Purchase
The HVAC units in both the high school/middle school cafeteria and library have stopped working this month. Two vendors have evaluated the unit and we have determined it is more financially feasible to replace the unit than to repair the 27-year-old equipment. Mike Newton, maintenance supervisor, reached out to multiple HVAC vendors in the last several months to quote scheduled HVAC replacements as well since these units have stopped working. Sure Air of Porter submitted the lowest bid and would be able to install the units before school starts for the 2021-22 school year. The cost will be $36,520. The money in the general fund will cover the emergency HVAC replacement costs and then ESSER 3 funds will be available after the approval of the application.
New Hires and Resignations
The board approved oneyear probationary teacher contracts for the 2021-22 school year for the following people: Jennifer Berger – elementary teacher, Eric Daniels – middle school band, Kara Koether – elementary teacher, Madison Oltmann – elementary teacher, Kylie Mica – elementary PE and middle school coach, Kyle Tidwell – middle school PE and coach. The board approved one year probationary professional contracts for the 2021-22 school year for Taylor Jensen – support specialist and Katherine Pena – ARD facilitator. Both will serve the Colorado River Cooperative. The board also received a letter of resignation from bus driver George Woolen.
Several students from the La Grange German Club were recognized for their awards at the Sprachfest German State Competition. Several students from the La Grange High School Yearbook staff were also recognized for achievements.
