What We Say—What We Mean

We folks here in the South have our own way of talking. We are known for our colloquialisms...our way of speaking that sets us apart from our neighbors to the North, East, and West After hearing the term “unprecedented” for the zillionth time in reference to the coronavirus, the mind plays tricks inside my head. Though I am not making light of this serious pandemic, I just have a desire to (hopefully) make you smile by blending some of the new terms we have recently learned with our old Southern lingo.
What We Say— What We Mean

Outcome Won’t Change

To the Editor: According to the far right Heritage Foundation voter fraud database, there have been 1,298 proven instances of voter fraud since 1979. Even if we assume that we doubled that number (rampant voter fraud) in 2020, and even if we assume they all came in one single state, it would sway the election by exactly ZERO electoral votes.

Protect Our Historical Treasures, Old Cemetery

To the Editor: Your laudable editorial about Beefhead Ditch and Founders’ Park, have created some questions in our minds. Since our research indicates that La Grange has already covered up a portion of the original ditch, can they do so again, considering that the time of its original construction may make it historical? Does the Fayette County Historical Society have any interest in the retaining both Beefhead Ditch and Founder’s Palk? Aside from wondering about the ditch, we would like both the city of La Grange and the Fayette County Historical Society to consider the matter of the old section of the City Cemetery.

Saving Lives Is Not Political

To the Editor: I feel that most folks in Fayette County and beyond want the same results when it comes to the pandemic. We all want to save lives and return to normal.

Don’t Claim ‘Freedom’ to Do Harm to Others

To the Editor: To coin your phrase, “Oh, Ms. Armstrong” in your letter last week, how dare you profane our sacred Constitution and the sacrifices made by our soldiers to defend it in your veiled rebuttal by using our Constitution to disclaim any personal obligation to respect and protect the lives and livelihoods of your fellow Americans by wearing a mask.

Long Way to Go to Achieve Civility Much Less Unity

To the Editor: First of all, kudos to The Fayette County Record for inviting the leaders of both major county political parties to offer comments regarding the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. I am glad that both had the opportunity to provide local perspectives on this historical event.

Washington Co. Lifts Its Mask Ordinance

Giddings Times & News Washington County has become the first in the surrounding area to not require citizens to wear face masks in public places unless certain stores or other businesses specifically require one to be worn. Other area counties that have sent the State requests to lift the mask mandate, include Fayette, Colorado, and Austin County, but none have put the no face-coverings order into effect.

Why Hasn’t it Rained?

I’ve been getting asked by a few readers about the recent lack of good heavy rains. More than a few readers are concerned with their tanks running dry or even the possibility of their wells drying up. But that is probably out of the question unless we get a substantial drought. By this time this year, with all of the hurricanes, you would think one would make its way over here and give us a good rain. But all of them just seem to have an eye for Louisiana.
