To the Editor: I always buy the Friday edition of the Record so I can read Andy Behlen’s gardening column and the Opinion section. While I fully expect letters of public shaming from Houston lawyers who move to our county and try to turn it into the place they left, I don’t expect the same propaganda from the Record yet there it was on the first page of the Opinion section.

To the Editor: I hope Mr Mikus is feeling better for all the venting he did in last week’s Letters to Editor. Besides incorrect information he submitted, I was appalled and even angered at his accusations of President Trump and Republicans being responsible for 40% of pandemic deaths.

To the editor: We visited Kreische Brewery Historic Site on Monday and stayed at the Best Western Motel Monday night where we received a complimentary copy of The Fayette County Record with a picture of a field of bluebonnets between La Grange and Ellinger. We headed home to Richmond this morning and decided we would stop to see the field.

To the Editor: In response to Brandon Scheilack’s letter last week: Let me start with a more positive light. While I mostly agree with at least two of your ideas: a farm-to-school program and hosting a school garden, I feel you gloss-over the devilish details and costs this would require.

To the Editor: This is the 70th Anniversary of the graduating class from La Grange High School. I wish all who are still with us to have a fun and safe life.

It’s the little things you don’t realize you miss until they come back into your life, like chicken fried steak, baked potatoes, Texas barbecue, Blue Bell ice cream, Dr. Peppers, hamburger and fries, and of course, pecan pie.

As voters in ten Texas counties went to the polls on Apr. 10, 1937 to pick a new congressman, the youngest candidate on the ballot spent the day in a hospital bed.

Up until 1953 the only supply of running water we had on our farm was a windmill that pumped water into a metal cistern. Before the metal one dad had a huge wooden cistern but I can’t remember that one. We had water piped underground to the kitchen where there was just one faucet over the kitchen sink. We also had one hydrant at the entrance of our house. This is where everyone “washed off ” before we came into the house. One towel would hang on the fence near the faucet. This one towel would be used by all the family members. This towel would hang there all week and wouldn’t be washed until “wash day” which usually was on Saturday.

The latest report on child maltreatment fatalities and near fatalities, compiled by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, indicates 251 children in Texas died in fiscal year 2020 due to abuse and neglect. That figure includes 28 children who died after being left unattended in hot vehicles.

I read this week about how the Waco Tribune-Herald newspaper building was rcently bought by Chip and Joanna Gaines, of Fixer Upper/Magnolia home renovation fame. The newspaper’s going to relocate to a much smaller space in a shopping center near the Brazos River, while the Gaines are going to make the newspaper building their new corporate headquarters.
