It’s the little things you don’t realize you miss until they come back into your life, like chicken fried steak, baked potatoes, Texas barbecue, Blue Bell ice cream, Dr. Peppers, hamburger and fries, and of course, pecan pie.

That’s a short list of vitals I’ve stuffed myself with since being back in Texas for a few weeks. My gosh, I didn’t know how starved I was for a steak, cooked medium rare. It was heavenly.

San Miguel de Allende has some of the best food in Mexico. Fresh vegetables and fruits, wonderful Mexican seasonings, chili peppers I’d never heard of, guacamole to die for, fabulous cheeses, and cuisines from around the world.

But not those flavors I grew up ingesting; those everyday foods I took for granted.

The first meal I consumed once landing in Dallas was barbecue ribs, and those forgotten favorites flowed swiftly into my memory cells and I remembered all those dishes I craved.

After the ribs came a DQ dipped cone. Now, who would think that would be high on my list of ‘wants’, but as soon as I saw the Dairy Queen sign I had to have one, so I did. And it was divine.

My birthday meal was at P.F. Chang’s where I pigged out on their famous chicken lettuce wraps and the crispy honey chicken, followed by the blazing and festive birthday special dessert of ice cream and the banana spring rolls. In other words, I had to be carried back to the car.

I couldn’t miss an opportunity to test a chicken fried steak with an Idaho russet baked potato. The potatoes in Mexico are not the same as these brown skinned taters, and they bake and taste quite differently. Not a bad difference, but just not the same.

One night my son-in-law grilled some filets wrapped in bacon, and today we headed over to the tiny town of Greenwood and had a mouthwatering hamburger chased by a piece of pecan pie.

I’m having to purchase new clothes on this trip because nothing I brought to wear will fit my growing form. But, I would be lying if I said I’m sorry for my gluttony. By the time I catch the plane back to SMA, I’ll have my taste buds satisfied, even if my britches are too tight.

It’s been a trip any foodie would enjoy.
