ICE and Memories From Liberia

I must be back in Samuel Doe’s Liberia, 1985, right? For six months in the spring and summer of 1985, I lived in Liberia, a West African nation about the size of the state of Tennessee, but inhabited by 16 native ethnic groups, with at least as many languages, all dominated by a powerful group of descendants of former US slaves (the “True Whig Party”). Their ancestors had been repatriated to Monrovia, Liberia, in the 1820s as part of the abolitionist movement.

Wild With Rage

There’s a story written in three of the gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—about Jesus healing a man with a deformed hand in the synagogue on the Sabbath. Working on the Sabbath was against the law, and some of the religious leaders were watching Jesus closely for an opportunity to accuse Him. After Jesus healed the man, the leaders were “wild with rage” and immediately began plotting a way to kill Him—all because He healed someone on the Sabbath.

Power Grid Holds Up During Wintry Blast

The electricity grid that covers most of Texas was holding up as of Sunday during the latest winter storm, although localized power outages were reported in Deep East Texas and far West Texas.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas dashboard indicated demand was running comfortably below available capacity. As of Sunday, more than 128,000 customers were without power, according to poweroutage. us, with the most being reported in Nacogdoches, Cherokee, and Rusk counties.

The Violent Comeback Of The Ku Klux Klan

The resurrected Ku Klux Klan launched a wave of terror and intimidation on Jan. 30, 1921 with the whipping, tarring and feathering of a Houston lawyer for the “crime” of defending blacks and petty criminals.

Coming out of mothballs in October 1920, the Klan spread like wildfire across the Lone Star State. More than 200,000 Texans -- roughly one out of every dozen white adults -- were suckers for the secret order’s sales pitch, that exploited their nostalgic reverence for the old Confederacy and vague desire for a moral housecleaning.

Surviving Life on Hold

“Please hold.” is the dreaded recording I hear thousands of times when I’m needing a quick answer. Actually, I get that same command even when I’m not needing anything before my next breath.

Thank You President Trump

To the editor: In case you missed this, (or your news channel just didn’t report it because they hate Trump), in his first year of office, our President Trump has accomplished the following: Gas prices are the lowest they have been in five years, and grocery prices are steadily coming down. Egg prices have dropped tremendously, as many other items and with time, most food items should probably come down to acceptable prices.

A Review of The American Revolution

To the editor: To continue our review of American colonial history, building to July 4, 2026, we focus on an independence milestone that occurred five years after the 1770 Boston Massacre. This event provides a well-established lesson taught to school children.

Trump & the 2nd Amendment

To the editor: Alex Pretti died exercising his Second Amendment right to legally bear arms in Minneapolis. ICE agents pinned him to the street, removed his holstered 9 mm handgun, and then gunned him down with ten shots.

Different Set of Circumstances

To the editor: The recent letter (“Snow Balls in 1770”) equating the illegal obstruction of federal law enforcement officers with the colonial-era clashes between British troops and Boston civilians reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of both history and the rule of law. As a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and as a descendant of men who fought for independence from the Crown, I take particular care in how our nation’s founding events are invoked.
