C APITAL Highlights The Texas Senate last week unanimously approved a $16.5 billion package to lower property taxes and inject billions of dollars into public schools. As reported by the Texas Tribune, the three separate bills require the state to send at least $5.38 billion to public schools while at the same time raising the state’s homestead exemption from $40,000 to $70,000, with an additional $20,000 exemption for homeowners 65 and older.

Leon Hale had a phrase he applied to people he thought highly of. He would say “he’s a feeling person.” That is, a person who expresses empathy in his, or her, behavior.

Last weekend I attended the first part of Shannon Ezer’s Flower Garden Seminar at The Jersey Barnyard. I don’t think of myself as a flower gardener, but maybe I should.

If there was a nuclear attack on the United States, radiation from the fallout could reach Fayette County within 45 minutes, warned Gilbert A. Koenig, coordinator for the Fayette County Civil Defense organization. Designated sites in La Grange were the Fayette County Courthouse, old Masonic hall, city hall and La Grange High School, and in Schulenburg at Schulenburg High School. Unfortunately, these locations offered only enough fallout shelter space for 20% of the Fayette County population. Those residents living and working in an area where public shelter was not available were advised to take shelter in the best protected part of their building. For more detailed instructions, Mr. Koenig advised all residents to read the handbook “In Time of Emergency” that was being distributed through the schools.

To the Editor: I am always excited for the Friday Edition of the Fayette County Record. It amazes me to no end to see that there are diverse beliefs that the citizens of Fayette County have.

To the Editor: Most of us Texans and Americans believe that all of us of all races, backgrounds, and genders, and places where we reside should have the freedom to learn, become ourselves, be ourselves, and pursue our dreams. Most of us also believe in serving the public good and making life better for us all.

To the Editor: William Bernsen of Plum’s March 17 letter to the Record exhibits the kind of creative and analytical and independent thinking that has been lacking with respect to keeping Fayette County’s hospital fully operational. His recommendations for Fayette County, where generations of my family were born and raised, are to be commended and should be seriously considered by the powers that be.
