Alexander Receives Writing Awards

Jennifer (Hatfield) Alexander, daughter of Mary Ann and Dr. Larry Hatfield of La Grange, is a recent recipient of two writing awards given through the graduate department at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, where she is currently studying for an English Master’s degree. Alexander’s work examined the efficacy of teacher written corrective feedback on second language student writing, which earned first place in the Graduate Interdisciplinary and Applied Linguistics category. Her second work, nominated to the Graduate Writing Studies category, was a web-based piece that explored the rhetorics of materiality and archival practices in digital spaces using her late grandfather, Gus L. Hruska’s World War II letters to home, which also earned first place. She plans to graduate next spring with an emphasis on literacy practices.

Olvera Signs Letter of Intent for Tarleton Band

April 22, Jorge Olvera of Schulenburg High School held a signing ceremony as he accepted an offer to join the Tarleton State University Band program. Schulenburg band director Justin Bartlett said, “Jorge Olvera has and continues to be a great example to our band members, who also participate in other activities. Not only was he a strong musician and leader in the band, but he was also active in football, powerlifting, track, and baseball. He did all this at a high level and never complained. This year he was thrown in the band and I couldn’t have asked for a better leader. He participated in everything we had to offer: marching band, concert band, jazz band, and UIL Solo & Ensemble contest on a Class 1 multi-percussion solo receiving a Division 1 rating. His hard work and dedication has helped the band reach our expectations and to raise the bar another level I know he will continue to do great things, and be a strong addition to the Sound and the Fury Marching Band at Tarleton, while he pursues his dream of becoming a vet.” Pictured are (back, from left) H.S. Principal Roque Thompson, Director of Bands Justin Bartlett, H.S. Counselor Sharon Johnson; front row, left to right: mother Nellie Herrera, Jorge Olvera, sister Shalanie Olvera and father Jorge Ivan Olvera.
