Sharing a Family Strudel Making Recipe Keeping Old Traditions Alive

On April 22, a local group of friends got together to try out the old tradition of strudel making. Barbara Brown and Suzette Surman purchased a Hands-On Apple Strudel Making/Baking Class donated by Shirley Schoener, Dale Schmidt, and Ginger Bosl at the 2022 Parents as Teachers (PAT) Annual Fundraiser in February. They graciously invited Diana Chafin and Phyllis Venghaus to join in on the fun. The donor spouses, Andy, Willy, and Willie supervised the process.

The Schmidt family strudel recipe was used and each baking “student” made two strudels. The Schoener kitchen was ready with all the ingredients. The donors did an excellent job of demonstrating and assisting the four students, giving tips to help them make the best strudel.

This four-hour class passed so quickly. The instructors were so knowledgeable, sharing their talents and tips, keeping the students focused on learning as much as they could. The supervisors kept everyone entertained as they would offer comments, “add more flour” or “just patch it” when someone experienced dough sticking to the rolling pin or tearing. Upon completing, everyone celebrated and were proud of the eight strudels. They enjoyed talking about this great experience and feasted on the array of scrumptious food, including the model strudel Dale Schmidt made.

The baking students not only went home with two strudels, ready to freeze or bake, but great memories.

The 2023 PAT Fundraiser will be held February 2023. If you would like to donate an item, please contact PAT at (979) 743-6584. Your donation will benefit many children and families in our community.
