Members of the boards of Habitat for Humanity and the Fayette County Disaster Recovery Team met recently at the site of Habitat’s planned senior housing community, “Camp Street Cottages.” The DRT has donated $30,000 to the Habitat project, the cost of materials for one house. Highlights from the Monday’s monthly meeting of the La Grange Independent School District Board of Trustees: Public comment Trey Cunningham addressed the board during comments from the public on Monday night concerning the school’s dress code policy. He specifically addressed the policy of wearing earrings by only females.

The City of Fayetteville has received funding from the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This funding covers COVID-19 related expenditures incurred between March 3, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2024.

Burleson County Tribune Caldwell welcomed back the Kolache Festival last Saturday after a two year absence, drawing a somewhat lighter crowd than usual, but organizers and those attending called it success. The 2020 festival was canceled due to COVID-19, but the festival returned this year with vendors, plenty of live music, dancing and the always popular bake show contest.

Sept. 15 marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanishspeaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange will host the annual Heritage Festival & Muziky on Oct. 15 and 16. The Fest will open on Friday in front of the Main Center and TCHCC’s famous homemade chicken and dumplings will be served while it lasts in the Hanslik Banquet Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Fayette County Volunteer Fire Fighter, Larry Marusik was one of 46 recipients honored at the 2021 Star of Texas Awards presented by Governor Greg Abbott at Shoreline Church in Austin on Friday, September 10. Larry lost his life March 23, 2018 while fighting a grass fire near Ellinger. Attending the event were his wife, Diane, daughter, Dawn Supak, son, Curt Marusik and Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department President Dave Weishuhn, and his wife, Lisa.

Benjamin Meyer, senior at Faith Lutheran High School in Warda, was named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program. Benjamin is the son of Rev. Jonathan and Ruth Meyer of Lexington. He will study pre-medicine and orthopedic surgery. Benjamin will complete the application process for the opportunity to earn a share of almost $30 million in scholarship awarded over the next few months.
