Cannon Fire for Texas Independence Day

Admiral Dr. Glenn Morris (center) with the Texas Navy of 1836 covers his ears after firing off the Round Top Town Cannon in celebration of Texas Independence Day on March 2. Morris and former Round Top Councilman Jerry Hinkel organized the celebration. Morris delivered a short speech entitled “The Road to Round Top and Texas Independence” just before firing the cannon, which took place at noon. More than two dozen folks gathered to watch the event – not a bad turnout considering organizers announced the event just a couple of days beforehand. Round Top Mayor Mark Massey said the town plans to make it a yearly event. Photo by Andy Behlen

Republican Turnout Sets Off-Year Record

This year’s Republican primary drew the largest number of voters ever in a non-presidential year, likely due to the strongly contested race for county judge. Unofficial reports from the county election administrator’s office show 5,797 votes cast in the GOP race for governor and 5,794 in the county judge race.
