New LG Council Ready to Get to Work After Interesting Election

Arthur Bosque will presumably join the La Grange City Council after the vote is canvassed. He won the election against Chirs Jernigan last Saturday by just one vote, 51-50, to represent Ward 4.

So far, Jernigan has not requested a recount.

Bosque joins a Council that will soon make one of the most important decisions facing the City in decades. La Grange City Manager Shawn Raborn recently announced that he plans to retire. The Council will begin searching for his replacement later this year.

“First of all, we’re going to have to hire a new city manager,” Bosque said. “That’s going to be hard to do. Shawn has been good.”

Bosque said he also plans to focus on solutions to the City’s drainage problems.

“Problem number one is drainage,” Bosque said. “That’s going to take a lot of money. I’m going to work with the people and the other councilmen to get it done.”

Bosque thanked voters for their support, however, he expressed some disappointment at the low voter turnout. The turnout was just 17 percent in Ward 4.

“A lot of people didn’t vote,” Bosque said. “It’s like they don’t care.”

Incumbents Kathy Weishuhn and Violet Zbranek both won reelection to their seats on the La Grange Council. They expressed similar sentiments concerning the voter turnout.

“I appreciate the people who actually came out and voted,” Weishuhn said. “We had a low voter turnout for the election. I think it’s important for people to come out and vote.

“I’d like people to know that we’re public officials and if they have something to question they should call us,” Weishuhn said.

Zbranek said she welcomes input from citizens.

“I have an open-door policy,” Zbranek said. “That’s what we’re here for – to listen to people.”
