St. Mark’s Kicks Off Annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive

St. Mark’s Medical Center is again holding their annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive for The Family Crisis Center families in Fayette, Lee, Bastrop & Colorado Counties. For more than 20 years, the hospital’s employees have coordinat-ed and donated to the event, along with community members.

County Leaders Talk Tires, Asset Forfeiture, Bills

At the Oct. 27 meeting County Commissioners acknowledged the dates for the 2022 Fayette County Tire Disposal. The County will set up tire collection locations at the Pct. 2 Road and Bridge Yard in Warrenton and the Pct. 4 Road and BridgeYard in Schulenburg. The disposal sites will be open to the public for two days, on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Disposal fees are $2 each for car and passenger truck tires, $10 each for large truck tires (18-wheeler type), and $20 each for tractor tires. Tires larger than 17.5x25 will not be accepted.

Locals Buy Historic Hall

A trio of Schulenburg businessmen purchased the historic Freyburg Hall in Southern Fayette County. Cale Kobza, who grew up near the hall, along with brothers Chip and Colton Bubela of Schulenburg, announced last week that they bought the century- old country hall from the Pettit family of Schulenburg.The new owners plan to renovate the dancehall, which was built by the Sons of Hermann in 1912, with a reopening tentatively scheduled for sometime next year.

Veterans Day Remembrances Begin in Special Way at Praha

Friday is Veterans Day, and lots of local events are this week, but Praha held one of the first with their 60th anniversary event honoring veterans of all eras at the Praha Cemetery Sunday, Nov. 6. Guest speaker was Mike Whitten, Retired Lieutenant Colonel U.S. Marines. There was a flyover by Commemorative Air Force and a fried chicken dinner. Praha is a sacred place on Veterans Day as nine young men from the tiny community gave their lives in World War II and are buried there. Photos by Stephanie Steinhauser

Nutcracker Making a Return to Festival Hill

It’s that time of year once again. The Round Top Festival Institute will present Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic ballet, The Nutcracker. This year’s production celebrates the 14th annual performance danced by Ovation, a youth ballet company in residency at Dancers Workshop in Austin.
