LGISD Makes Handbook Changes
At the July La Grange School Board Meetings, some revisions were made to the School Handbook. Here’s a roundup of those changes: Page 26: Revised university visits to match district of innovation (allowing more days) Page 31-32: Updated bullying prevention expectations – This change is a result of the legislative session - highlighting words such as promoting a positive school culture, building healthy relationships. The campuses will have to integrate research-based instruction about bullying and prevention. The staff will be surveying students on the school culture at each campus. There will be a campus committee to address prevention of bullying and they will be providing intervention. It is also noted in the handbook that there is an anonymous reporting system that students can find online where students can report bullying and other things that they see.
Turtle Wing Receives a Grant from Texas Mutual
Turtle Wing Foundation was recently granted $25,000 from Texas Mutual to be used for therapeutic, educational, and recreational scholarships for those with learning challenges in the rural area. These funds will be used to directly fund services, ranging from speech therapy to tutoring to inclusive dance, for those whose families may not be able otherwise to afford the services.
Shelter Has 137 Animals
Stray dogs and cats running at large present a health hazard for Fayette County citizens. Spay and neuter is the only way to manage the stray, unwanted dog and cat population in Fayette County. The Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter offers a discount voucher program to the citizens of Fayette County for the spay/neuter of family pets. Call (979) 966-0021 for more information. As of July 28, total intake is 1033: 482 dogs and 551 cats in need. As of July 28, the shelter has 137 animals in care: 56 dogs/81 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner. Fayette Lake Water Scooped by Planes To Fight Bastrop Fire
Pictured left is one of two firefighting planes known as “super scoopers” that flew into Fayette Lake to collect water to dump on the Powderkeg Fire in Bastrop County Tuesday, Aug. 1. A video shared with the Record showed the two planes skimming across the surface of the lake Tuesday afternoon. In less than a minute, the planes filled their tanks with water and took back off towards Bastrop. A nearby resident said the planes made three trips to the lake Tuesday afternoon. Walter Flocke, a spokesman for the Texas Forest Service, reported that the fire was 60 percent contained as of Wednesday afternoon. At its peak, the fire burned more than 100 acres between SH 71 and the Bastrop State Park. Flocke said the fire had destroyed at least one structure and one outbuilding as of Wednesday.

The Living Vine Christian Church is hosting a garage sale Saturday, Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. at 124 S. Water St. behind Reeder’s A/C. All proceeds go to help with medical expenses for Visar Halilaj, the owner of Ere’s Italian Restaurant in La Grange. Halilaj was in a motorcycle accident on June 29 and is still in the hospital. Come shop in an air conditioned building and help this family. Several families are selling an assortment of items.
