Lowe Wins Optimist Essay Contest

La Grange High School junior Riley Lowe was presented her $500 check for winning the La Grange Optimist Club’s Essay Contest on May 9 at the LGISD scholarship ceremony. Lowe’s essay was judged the best from among several that were submitted by Fayette County youth.

Graduation Time!

La Grange High School will hold its graduation ceremonies Thursday, May 23 at 8 p.m. at Leopard Stadium (weather permitting).

Storm Slams This Area

A violent storm passed over Fayette County Thursday afternoon, May 16, which downed trees and power lines. The northern parts of the County suffered the worst damage.

Chemical Spill on Highway 71

A tanker truck carrying a hazardous material (reportedly chlorine-based) wrecked Sunday night on Highway 71 near the Power Plant Road. Crews worked overnight trying to clean up the scene. Traffic was diverted through Fayetteville. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said there was “no danger to the community.” More on this developing story in Friday’s edition.

Fleming Speaks at the Fayetteville Graduation

Fayetteville was the first county school to hold its graduation ceremony as their seniors got diplomas Friday in the school’s gym. The featured speaker was Retired U.S. Army Captain Chad Fleming Fleming is a highly decorated war hero who deployed five times after becoming an amputee. He is one of the few who have been able to redeploy into combat as an amputee.
