On Tuesday evening around 8:14 p.m. the Fayette County Sheriff’s office received a 911 call reporting a vehicle fire on FM 2145 near Goehring Rd. The Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene with Deputies Wesley Arrison and Jason Fowler. Upon arrival a 2011 GMC Acadia was under a carport next to a residence on fire. The vehicle was pulled away from the residence and carport. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. The owner of the vehicle suffered burns to his legs trying to extinguish the fire. EMS Unit Medic 1, and EMS 3 Supervisor were notified and responded to the scene. The owner of the vehicle was transported by Medic 1 to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin.

On Friday afternoon around 4:21 p.m. the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting 18 Wheeler truck on fire on Interstate 10 eastbound at the 663 mile marker. The Flatonia Fire Department was notified and responded to the scene. Flatonia P.D. Officers Trey Tunis and Taylor Amos also responded to the fire along with Deputies Herman Olvera and Cedar Chase. Upon arrival it was reported the truck was fully engulfed in fire. Assistance from the Schulenburg Fire Department was requested and they responded to the scene. The fire was extinguished and there were no reported Injuries. The trailer contained food items and it is believed the fire originated from the engine area.

‘Tis the season to be merry— and the staff of Fayette County’s four public libraries and the members of the local Smith-McMillan Chapter, Daughters of the Revolution, certainly are. On Dec. 11, thanks to a NSDAR Stars and Stripes America 250 Celebration Grant, the Smith-McMillan Chapter was able to “play Santa” and purchase 32 books to be distributed in county public libraries for patrons of all ages to enjoy.

The Smith-McMillan Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual Christmas Social and Luncheon at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Fritsch Auf! Valley Country Club in La Grange. Regent, Carolyn Caflisch and Chaplain, Sherry Hebert opened the Social with the DAR Ritual and Prayer, and Lois Wink led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Past Regent, Pamela Burke led the Americans Creed, and Gina Minzenmeyer led the Preamble to the U. S. Constitution. Sherry Hebert accompanied the singing of the National Anthem on the violin and Janis Richardson led the Pledge to the Texas Flag.

Fayette County 4-H members competed in the Wilson County Livestock Judging Contest on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The annual Fayette County Czech Heritage Society Christmas party was held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at TCHCC in La Grange. The evening began with socializing and singing of Czech party songs and Christmas carols to the music of Jimmie Fucik on accordion. A catered meal of turkey and dressing by Richters Catering was served with a cake baked by HEB Bakery. Vera Wehring won the Czech trivia contest created by Carolyn Heinsohn. The attendees also participated in a White Elephant gift exchange.
