Animal Shelter Update

As of Oct. 11, the total intake for 2024 for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 1,312: 581 dogs and 731 cats in need. As of Oct. 11, the shelter has 104 animals in care: 36 dogs and 68 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.

CARTS Offering Free Rides for Early Voting, Election Day

The Capital Area Rural Transportation System, along with many Texas transit providers, taxis, and ride share services, will offer free rides to and from polls for both early voting and Election Day. CARTS will be offering free rides for voters during early voting and to voters headed to the polls on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov.

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship Deadline Oct. 31

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracyloving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you. Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 25,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.

Newborn Kitten Blessed

Marilyn and Chuck Gibson of La Grange discovered a newborn, orphaned kitty by their barn Sunday morning as they were preparing to go help with the St. James’ Episcopal Church’s Blessing of the Animals, a tradition on St. Francis Feast Day. He was blessed by Rev. Dr. Sharon Turner at St. James’ this past Sunday. “The little fella was skin and bones,” Chuck said.

“11 Days on the Colorado” Program/Book Signing Oct. 24

The staff of the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives in La Grange is excited to host a Texas history program and book signing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 24th with James E. Brasher, author of the newly released 11 Days on the Colorado: The Pivotal Battle Unfought. Brasher will provide a fascinating look at the movements of Sam Houston and the Texian Army in our area in March 1836 between the fall of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto.
